Living Well with an Ostomy in Nova Scotia Winters

Winter in Nova Scotia is absolutely beautiful but the weather is cold, windy and often unpredictable. For people living with an ostomy, the season brings unique challenges along with opportunities to adjust routines, stay comfortable, and continue living fully. With some planning and self-care, winter doesn’t have to slow you down.

Staying Comfortable in the Cold

Cold temperatures can affect ostomy supplies, especially adhesives. It is had been documented from ostomy manufacturers (Convatec, Hollister, Coloplast) that:

  • Hydrocolloid adhesives become less flexible when cold

  • Cold wafers may not conform as well to the skin initially

  • Adhesion can be reduced if the skin or appliance is cold at application

In winter, pouches and wafers may feel stiffer, and adhesion can be reduced if the skin or appliance is cold. A simple solution is to warm your supplies before applying them. You can tuck them under your arm, use a heating pad on low, or warm the wafer between your hands for a few minutes. Applying your appliance in a warm room, especially after a shower, can also improve wear time.

Many people find that soft base layers help keep their pouch warm and comfortable while preventing irritation. High-waisted leggings, undershirts, or ostomy wraps can also offer extra support and warmth without restricting movement.

Skin Care During Dry Winter Months

Cold air outside and dry heat indoors can be tough on your skin and during the cold winter months it is important to pay a little extra attention to skin care.

Watch for signs of dryness, redness, or irritation. If your skin feels tight or itchy, review the products you’re using and if skin issues persist, reach out for professional advice early to prevent bigger problems.

Prepare for Unpredictable Weather

Snow, ice, and storms can make travel tricky. When heading out, plan ahead by carrying a small emergency ostomy kit especially during long drives or unpredictable weather. Power outages are also common during winter storms, so keeping extra supplies accessible and knowing where a flashlight or battery-powered light is can make a big difference.

Staying Connected

Winter can feel isolating, especially for those who are newly living with an ostomy. Attending our monthly Ostomy Halifax meetings can help remind you that you’re not alone!

Our members range from new members to founding members and whether you’ve had your ostomy for months or decades, you and your story matters.  Coming together (whether at our meetings or online) can help someone else feel less alone! Our in person meetings are a great way to connect with others, socialize and hear from experts (pharmacists, doctors, suppliers etc.)

If you’re struggling or have questions, remember that support is available. Ostomy Halifax is here all year long through every season, storm, and snowfall!
